The ladies secured their first win over Singapore with a 17 - 05 win after a heavy defeat against Kazakhstan with 36 - 00 in the opening game at the Asian Sevens Women's Series which is underway in Hong Kong. Sri Lanka will play China in the final pool game at 7.20am SL time tomorrow.
Sri Lanka v Kazakhstan
In the first game so many mistakes and it was a physical battle for the coach Sudath Sampath's team. The ladies had much bet preparation but failed in front of the bronze medal winners in Asian Games. Kazakhs capitalized all the options were given and scored six tries in the 14 minutes.
Scored the very first try which seemed a knock-on and the ladies didn't make an attempt to tackle assuming an obvious knock-on. But the referee allowed play-on which resulted in a converted try. Kazakhs scored two more tries before the half time.
HT: SL 00 - 19 KAZ
Ladies got few penalties and scrum due to unforced errors of their opposition but Charani Theekshana the stepper got caught in the Kazakhs traffic which resulted in a turn-over followed by a try. Kazakhs with some crispy handling and shifting the ball side to side managed score two more tries and made an ominous signs on their progress.
FT : SL 00 - 36 KAZ
Sri Lanka v Singapore
A good come back after struggling in the first three minutes. Ladies gifted the first try when a 5m penalty was not found touch by Ayesha Kaluarachchi. Singapore's Young Yu said thank you very much as she scored the try with the collection of Kaluarachchi's kick.
Since then Sri Lanka dominated and Kaluarachchi made a classic breakdown turn-over as redemption for her early mistake. Sri Lanka opened the account with a line-out Kaluarachchi as the first receiver made a lovely break and a switch pass to Ayesha Perera to score under the post. Former captained Thanuja Weerakkody missed the extra two points. Just before the half time Dilrukshi Kumari scored a try to extend the lead
HT : SL 10 - 05 SIN
Didn't much of a glimpse by the speedster Dulani Pallikondage in both games. Coming off the bench with his first touch she tried running circle around her opposite number but was bundled in to touch.
Singapore over threw a line-out which was collected by Weerakkody who didn't need a second invitation, as she went down 70m for a superb try and the conversion was nailed from wide angle by Kaluarachchi. Just before the final whistle Kaluarachchi was found guilty for a late tackle and was sin-binned. However, it did not affect the ladies in terms of scoreboard pressure.
FT : SL 17 - 05 SIN
