Solders showed their dominance in the Women's SAGT Inter-Club Sevens Rugby Tournament 2019 when they edged out the Sailors 19/10 in the final at Havelock Park.
National player, Dulani Pallikondange was in cracking form scoring two superb tries for the winners in the later half. For her magnificent performance she was judged as the Player of the Tournament. Navy were the defending champions settled for the runner-up in the Cup. Meanwhile Air Force beat Army B 20 to nothing to secure Plate while the Red Shirts beat Sabaragamuwa 48/7 to take away the Bowl. Shield was won by Navy Development outfit defeating Southern 36 to nothing.
SAGT once again propped up with Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) in sponsoring Women's rugby in the country over a decade. Chief Commercial Officer of SAGT was the chief guest.
SAGT's Chief Commercial Officer Ted Muttiah speaking said "Women's rugby is the fastest growing team sport in the world today. Through SAGT's involvement, we've seen encouraging development of Women's rugby in Sri Lanka. Much work has been done and there is much more yet to do. Well done to Sri Lanka rugby (SLR) and all stakeholders involved in the development of Sri Lanka women's rugby. Let's move forward with this momentum and get more grass roots participation in the game".
He further added, "Sri Lanka's Women's rugby has enormous potential to feature prominently on the world stage. Evidently we have the talent to be in the top three countries in greater Asia. However, we need to build depth in our talent pool and SAGT is committed to support SLR to bring the Women's rugby program to maturation"
