Army Women’s Team Clinch Inter Club Rugby 7's

The Army Women's team played some outstanding 7"s rugby to clinch the women's Inter Club Rugby 7's Tournament 2019 at the Havelock Grounds played on Sunday the 26th of May. The annual tournament organized by Sri Lanka Rugby featured 8 teams, the most number of teams ever to participate in a Women's club 7's tournament in Sri Lanka.

 

Women's Rugby giants Sri Lanka Navy 'A" team were in Group 'A' along with Sri Lanka Air force, Sabaragamuwa Province and Navy Development Team. Group 'B' comprised of Army 'A', CR & FC, Army 'B' and Southern Province.

 

Shield, Bowl, Plate and Cup were the 4 categories the teams competed for, which enabled all teams to go home rewarded. Certificates were also awarded to all the participants.

 

The matches were very competitive, and it was good to see the young women's teams performing well. There were a few high scoring one sided games which involved Army and Navy against the lessor teams, but the rest of the games provided a good fight and promise for women's Rugby in the future.

 

Navy Development Team beat Southern province 39/0 to take the Shield Category. While CR & FC who played better Rugby in the 2nd round took the Bowl category beating Sabaragamuwa Province 48/07. Air force who only lost 1 game in the tournament won the Plate final beating the Army 'B'9 team 20 to Nil.

 

The most exciting game was the Cup final. Defending Champions Navy 'A' took on a high riding Army 'A' team. It was a fantastic fast moving game. The Army team out played Navy with their speed to take the game away 19 /10 and win the Cup Final.

 

Dulani Pallikondage from Army 'A' was adjudged player of the tournament for a creditable performance in the tournament

 

Mr. Ted Muttiah (Chief Executive Officer Sales and Marketing - SAGT) the sponsors of Women's Rugby was the Chief Guest. Also attending the awards presentations were Mr. Rizly Illyas (Deputy President - SLR), Colonel Dammika Gunasekera (Chairman Development - Women's Rugby) and Brigadier Sunil Ranasinghe (Council Member - SLR).

 

Few of the young upcoming players alone with regulars were also selected and invited for the Sri Lanka Rugby pool practice starting soon.
