Women's Inter Club Rugby 7's Tournament to kick off

The Sri Lanka Rugby Women's Inter Club Rugby 7's Tournament 2019 will kick off this Sunday the 26th May at Havelock Sports Club grounds. The annual tournament will feature 8 teams this year, the highest number of teams ever to participate in a Women's Club's tournament in Sri Lanka.

 

Women's Rugby giants Sri Lanka Navy will be defending their title and will field 2 teams, their number 1 opponents over the years Sri Lanka Army, will also have 2 teams. Sri Lanka Air force and CR & FC who have been regulars in this tournament will feature a team each. The other 2 teams are Sabaragamuwa and Southern province who poses a team of young players.

 

After the completion of the round robin games, the teams will play for Shield, Bowl, Plate and Cup categories which means all teams participating in the tournament will have an opportunity to play in the final round.  

 

The tournament will kick off at 10.00 am, with the Cup final scheduled for 5.20pm.

South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) the first private container terminal in Sri Lanka (with approximately 60% of Sri Lankan shareholding) and commenced operations in 1999, launching the Port of Colombo as global trade's preeminent gateway hub to South Asia. Today, the terminal is one of three operators in the Port of Colombo and continues to offer the international container shipping community a competitive best in class service. SAGT is a Board of Investment flagship company consisting of four shareholders - John Keells Holdings, Maersk/APM Terminals, SLPA and Peony investments (subsidiary of Evergreen Marine Corporation).

Chairman Sri Lanka Women's Rugby Development committee Col. Dammika Gunasekera and the Sri Lanka Rugby Women's development committee is responsible in organizing this tournament on behalf of Sri Lanka Rugby.

This tournament also will serve as a trial to select the National Women's 7's pool in preparation of the Asia 7's series.
