Two Sri Lankan's attend the World Rugby/Asia Rugby Judicial Workshop

The Asia Rugby Judicial Workshop conducted by World Rugbywas held in Brunei on the 4th& 5th of May 2019, with programs taking place at the Mulia Hotel and Belapan Stadium. Mr. Aruna Jayasekara and Mr. Shahid Sangani, twoexperiencedjudicialofficers in Sri Lanka, were nominated by Sri Lanka Rugby to attend this important workshop to further enhance their knowledge as a Judicial Officer.

Activities involved Theory & Practical with mock hearings andlive hearing observationsfollowed by individual feedback on the assessment exercises.

 

The Theory Section was held on Day 1 at the Mulia Hotel.The theory section included Modules featuring Red Card test for citing and red card cases, Sanctioning andRed Card sanctioning quiz. The section involved the participants inVideo Clips, Group discussionsandIndividual sanctioning exercise using work sheets.

 

The Practical Section was held on Day 2 at the Belapan Stadium. Live Hearings, Hearing Role Plays, Written Decisions & Communication andIndividual Feedback Sessions &Competency Transcript sessionswere part of the practical section.

The workshop was conducted by 3 of the most experienced world Rugby Educators, Mr. Ben Rutherford (World Rugby Senior Legal Counsel and Educator), Ms. Wang Shao Ing (World Rugby Judicial Officer and Educator) and Mr. Simon Ryan (Citing Commissioner Asia Rugby).

 

12 participants from Singapore, UAE, Japan,Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Host Brunei, New Zealand and England attended this very important workshop.

 

Mr. Aruna Jayasekarawho has been involved as a JO for over 8 years with Asia Rugby, said ' The workshop has been a great learning experience and opportunity for me to share my knowledge among the participants, to enhance my confidence as a JO, and to appreciate that all JO"s go through similar complexities when arriving at decisions'. He further went on to thank Ben and Shao for being great resource personal and for delivering the training material in a very practical way".He also extended his appreciation to Sri Lanka Rugby for their continuous support to him as a Judicial Officer and for nominating him for the workshop.

 

Mr. Shahid Sangani while thanking Sri Lanka Rugby said 'I have been a JO for around 3 years and all my experience have been in Sri Lanka with limited exposure. The training we received from some of the Top Educators from the World Rugby including Ms. Wang Shao Ing, the WR Educator and JO at the last Olympics has given a totally new perspective to the role of JO and how to conduct JO hearings. The diversity and experience of the participants and the format of the training program helped me to gain a lot from their experience. And I hope I will get the opportunity to put this training to good use in Sri Lanka and the region in the future".
