The Sri
Lanka national Rugby fifteens squad will leave today (30th
April) for a tour to Malaysia to play a few friendly games ahead of the 'Asia
Division I Rugby Championship' due to commence in May.
Due to the unrest prevailing in the
country practice was disrupted for a brief period, but resumed under the
guidance of Head coach Matthew
Lee. The team will be
playing two games on the 1st and 4th of May in Kuala Lumpur.
Omalka Gunaratne will lead the national
outfit in Malaysia which comprises of a 32 member squad. The squad has a
mixture of senior players and fresh faces that will be on tour.
Sri Lanka will depend and look forward
to a few senior players to stand up, namely Mithun Hapugodage, Anuradha Herath, Thilina Wijesinghe and Prasad
Madusanka. Young, talented and upcoming
players Jason Melder, Reeza Rafaideen, Kevin Dixon, Kavindu Perera and Buddhima
Piyarathne will be looking forward to make 1st impressions. Players
in the caliber of Dinuk Amerasinghe, Thilina Bandara and Samuel Maduwantha who
performed well in the dialog rugby league have also been recognized and given
the opportunity.
Viraj Prashantha (Forwards coach) and
Fazil Marija (Backs coach) will assist head coach Matthew Lee. Rohan Chinthaka
will once again be on tour as the manager and will be assisted by Ashad
Liyanaarachchige (assistant manager). Tharaka Vithanage is the assigned Physiotherapist and Asitha
Lakruwan the Massiio.
Lasitha Gunaratne (president - SLR), Rear Admiral H.A.U.D. Hettiarachchi
(Chef de Mission) and Rohan Abayakoon (National Selector) will be touring with
the squad as well.
Sri Lanka will be looking to use this opportunity in Malaysia to fine tune their game and strategies, before the all important Asia Division I Rugby Championship' in May.
