After a month long road trip across the country to spread
the word of sport and Rugby, the Platinum awards initiative finally was back in
Colombo, and St. John's College,
Nugegoda was the final stop.
Sri Lanka Rugby joined hands with MTV / MBC Network to introduce, promote and develop rugby at the
grass root level, starting from Schools at all districts and provinces around
the country, and the overall journey to all provinces and districts has been
well received and appreciated by all.
St. John's College
(20 boys), St. Joseph's Girls College (25 girls), Kottawa Dharmapala Vidyalaya
(05 boys, 07 girls), Dharmapala Vidaylaya Pannipitiya (16 boys, 10 girls) and Anula
Vidyalaya (130 girls) participated totaling 213 students. 172 of them been
girls was very encouraging for the sport.
The age groups ranged
from 12 to 20 years of age. Dignitaries from MTV / MBC Network, Allianz
insurance, Principles from Schools, representatives from government institutions
and sports bodies were present. It was a fantastic finish to a very successful
project carried out around the country.
The program was
conducted by the Sri Lanka Rugby coaching and development unit.
In the coming months,
Sri Lanka rugby will follow up on this initial success, with coaching camps and
other development activities to promote rugby and find new talent.
