The Platinum awards initiative to spread Rugby across
the country reached the Sabaragamuwa Province, with Kegalle the identified
location.
Sri Lanka Rugby and MTV
/ MBC Network are carrying out an island wide campaign to promote and develop
rugby at the grass root level, starting from Schools at all districts and
provinces around the country.
Kegalle is
a large town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka.
And the surrounding area produces graphite, precious stones and agricultural
products such as rice. Kegalle has an agricultural based economy and mainly
produces rubber.
Kegalle is the nearest town to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a major
tourist attraction in the area, which is 10.5 km (6.5 mi) to the
north-east. Rugby is not that popular, and spreading the word at grass root
level is a very important step taken by Sri Lana Rugby.
The campaign reached the St. Joseph's Girls College, which was the location for the Rugby introduction program.
5 Schools, including the host St.
Joseph's Girls College (21 girls), Dudley Senanayake Central College (04 boys,
12 girls), Galigamuwa MMV (10 girls), Pinnawala Central College (14 boys,
15 girls) and St. Mary's College (15 boys) participated. 58 Girls and 34 boys totaling 92 took part in Kegalle. It
was pleasing to see the majority been girls.
Under
12, 14, 16, and 18 were the age categories. There were a number of invitees and
dignitaries present at the program. Coaches from Sri Lanka
Rugby conducted the introductory program.
