Hettiarchchige Premasiri - An Appreciation
Police Rugby is deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague
Mr Hettiarchchige Premasiri last nigh in Rome, Italy. He is a product of
Dharmaduta College, Badulla who then excelled in Athletics and Soccer. He was
talent spotted to rugby at the Police Inter Division Sevens tournament 1976
whilst under training representing the Sri Lanka Police College, Kalutara and
later moulded himself to be an deceptive winger; very quick to accelerate off
the feet. He has been one of the leading try scorers on many seasons. His match
winning four back to back tries all covering an average of at least 50 meters
in the second half against Air Force in 1985 is considered his best ever
performance with that formidable side.
He was rewarded instantly by the
then Late IGP Mr H.W.H. Weereasinghe. He represented Police Rugby team for 12
long years (1976 - 1987) and had the distinction leading the side in 1986 to
become the unbeaten league champions of the
"Gold Leaf" trophy. He toured with the national team for HK
Sevens and Far East (HK & Taiwan) in 1985 and Bangkok Asiad in 1986, all
under national skipper and his teammate, Rohan Gunaratne, the present Executive
Director of SLR. We will truly miss a dear and humble friend. Police Rugby and
the rugbyhub join to extend their deepest condolences to his beloved wife
Kanthi, the daughter and son. "May he Attain Nibbana"
