Dialog Rugby League 2019/20
Defending champions Kandy SC
started the season well going on to defeat Air Force SC by 26 points to 08 in
their first game of the Dialog Rugby League 2019/20 at home in Nittawela, Kandy.
It was heavy rain in Kandy when the game kicked off and was
not easy for both teams handling the ball. Kandy scored first in the
10th minute of the game when Buwaneka Udangamuwa went over the line off a
Kandy scrum. Thilina Wijesinghe did the needful with the conversion to take an
early 07 point lead.
Thereafter Lavanga Perera scored the 2nd try
under the post for the host, and Thilina Wijesinghe once again obliged with the
2 extra points to take Kandy to 14 points.
Soon after, Air Force got their first points on the board
through a penalty from Gayantha Iddamalgoda in the 28th Minute of
the game.
Though it was slippery conditions, Kandy managed to
handle the ball to work their line well for Diluksha Dange to touch down near
the corner flag on the brink of half time. Kandy went in to half time with
comfortable lead of 19 to 03 over the visitors.
Captain Nigel Ratwatte
put his name on the score sheet soon into the 2nd half with the help
of his forwards to score the 4th try for the host. Thilina Wijesinghe
showed his kicking skill once again completing a difficult kick through the
post. Kandy were up 26 points to 03.
Air Force finally managed to score their first try of the
game when hooker Parakrama Rathnayake went over the try-line. Fullback Gayantha
Iddamalgoda failed to make the conversion.
There were opportunities for teams to score, but the
slippery wet conditions were just too much to handle. Air Force received a few
penalty opportunities, but failed to capitalize even after flanker Tharindu
Chathuranga was sent off with a yellow card.
Kandy SC once again showed their skill and dominance even
it rainy conditions, and as always dominated proceedings in the first half. Air
Force will learn from their mistakes and will be looking to come back strongly
in the next game.
