Dialog Rugby League 2019/20
Longdon place witnessed a
fantastic season opener in the Dialog Rugby League between the host CR & FC
and Police SC which went down to the wire before the host clinched a hard
fought 17 - 13 win.
Police started off well winning a penalty which was
converted by Janith Chandimal to take an early 3 point lead. They also had the
opportunity to extend that lead, but this time around Chandimal could not deliver.
Under wet ground conditions it was tough going for both
teams, but CR & FC managed to make a break through the strong Police defense
for Janidu Dilshan to score the 1st try of the season for the host
team. Riza Mubarak made no mistake with the conversion to take them in to the
lead.
Fijian Emosi Vunivosa made a huge difference for the
visiting team as he showed his power and speed making several breakthroughs.
Unfortunately a spill by Sachith Silva near the try line cost Police dearly in
the 1st half.
Riza Mubarak had the opportunity to further extend the
lead, but missed the post after Risith Silva was yellow carded for Police. At
half time the scores read 07 - 03 in favor of CR & FC.
Police came in to the 2nd half strongly to
score their first try of the day through Hooker Rasith Silva from a rolling
maul. Janith Chandimal failed with the conversion leaving Police with a 1 point
lead. Police Prop forward Lahiru
Pavithra was yellow carded for a high tackle, giving Riza Mubarak a penalty which
he cleared cleanly to once again take the lead 10-08.
Janith Chandimal missed another penalty opportunity for
Police and they were punished thereafter when the host scored their 2nd
try. Janidu Dilshan taking a quick tap set up Gemunu Chethiya to score under
the post. It was too easy for Riza Mubarak as CR & FC took a fair lead in
the game, score reading 17 - 08.
When Rahul De Silva got the yellow card near the 22-meter
line, Police made use of the extra man for Sujan Kodithuwakku to score and
narrow the lead. With 2 minutes left to play Police opted against the
conversion trailing by 3-points.
But thereafter CR & FC hung on to secure a narrow 3
point win in a hard fought 1st game of the season.
Score at Full Time:
CR & FC - 17 (2 converted Tries, 1 Penalty) / Police SC - 13 (2
