Tag Rugby Festival in Kebithigollewa Under the GIR Programmer
Sri Lanka Rugby in conjunction with the North Central Province Rugby Union conducted successfully a Tag Rugby Carnival at the Kebithigollewa Educational Zonal, Irrigation Ground in Padaviya, on 10th November 2019.
This event was a follow up on the initial 'Getting to Know' rugby program SLR carried out in October 2018 in the same region together with MTV / MBC Network Island wide. The initial campaign was to promote and develop rugby at the grass root level, starting from Schools at all districts and provinces around the country.
7 Schools from the region participated at the event which included Mahasen M.V, Mahasen Primary School, Aluthhalmillawa M.V, E-Yaya M.V, C-Yayay M.V, Aliwanguwa M.V and D-10 M.V.
In total there were 178 students under the age categories of 10, 12 and 14. This included 134 Boys and 44 girls who eagerly participated at Tag Rugby to learn and educate themselves much more about the game. There were lots of parents and teaches as well attending who gave their fullest support.
The main purpose of the Event:
Promote tag Rugby at rural level schools
Promote and create awareness among the parents on rugby
Develop rugby through the Sports teachers at schools level
Playing rugby and taking part at district and provincial level
To form rugby teams at schools level
To form rugby clubs in Padaviya
Overall it was a great opportunity for the students who really enjoyed playing Rugby. Trophies and certificates were given to the players and teams who performed well. Events of this nature will be carried out by Sri Lanka Rugby to spread and grow the game to all parts of the Country
