The Sri Lanka Women's Rugby squad
has left for China to participate at the Olympic Qualifications. Twelve teams will
qualify for women's rugby sevens at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Japan automatically qualifies as host, with the top four
teams of the 2018-19 World Rugby
Women's Sevens Series securing their
spots. Afterwards, qualification is determined with each of the six continental
confederations determining a representative, and the remaining qualification
spot determined through an international sevens tournament to be determined.
With Japan already cementing their
place, these qualifying tournaments are the only way for another Asian team to
grab its place at the Olympics next year. Hong Kong and China will be the
favourites for both the men and women segments.
The Sri Lanka squad that had a disappointing Asia 7’s Rugby Series will be looking to redeem themselves at this qualifiers. 12 players and 4 officials will be on tour.
