Kandy SC once again came on top, putting up an
unbeaten performance to clinch the Dialog Club Rugby 7's tournament which concluded over the weekend (June 29th & 30th)
at the Race
Course Grounds in Colombo.
24 matches were played on day 1, with 16 teams
in 4 groups battling it out to clinch the coveted trophy. 20 games were played
on day 2 for the Shield, Bowl, Plate and Cup categories.
CR &
FC who came in to the final unbeaten, failed to match up to the high riding
Kandy team, and were beaten 24-14 in the Cup Final.
In the Cup semifinals played earlier, Kandy ran over Havelock
Sports Club 29-5, and CR & FC defeated a fighting Police SC 26 - 12.
In other
categories, Air Force 'B' defeated Malay CC 24-00 to claim the Shield segment, and
Police 'B' defeated Army 'B' 12-7 to clinch the Bowl segment. Navy ‘A’ had a
hard fought win over Air Force 'A' 24-19 to take away the plate segment.
CH &
FC who featured 2 teams unfortunately could not make it to any of the finals
and ended up having a disappointing 7's tournament. Malay CC will be happy to
make it to the shield final having played this tournament for the 1st
time.
The
Winners and Runners up of each segment received medals and trophies.
Kavindu Perera (Kandy SC) won the highest try scorer award
with 8 tries and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award to end a super
tournament.
