The much looked forward Dialog Club Rugby 7's tournament got underway today (June 29th) at the Race Course Grounds in Colombo.
24 matches were played on day 1, with 16 teams in 4 groups battling it out to
clinch the coveted trophy.
Kandy, Havelock's, CR & FC and Police 'A' were
unbeaten on day 1 topping their respective groups by winning all 3 games.
Havelock’s
came on top in group 'A" beating last year's champions CH & FC 'A' 33/10, Army
'B' 42/00 and trashed Peterson RFC 62/07. CR & FC dominated group ‘B’
defeating Police ‘B’ 31/10, running over Galle RFC 65/00 and a strong Air force
'A' 27/00.
Kandy
SC started the season strongly as always dishing out some excellent 7's rugby
to defeat CH & FC 'B' 45/05, a challenging 28/12 win over Air force 'B' and
a sound win over a strong Navy 'A' side 29/07 to win group 'C'.
Group
'D' saw Police 'A' get a big win over newcomers Malay CC 59/00, a 33/17 win
over Navy 'B', and a fantastic 21/14 win
over Army ‘A’ in the last game of the day which probably was the most evenly
contested game on day 1.
The
teams who finished 3rd and 4th in their respective
groups; Army 'B', Peterson RFC, Police 'B', Galle RFC, CH & FC ‘B’, Air
force ‘B’, Malay CC and Navy ‘B’ will fight it out on Day 2 in the Bowl/ Shield
segment.
While
Havelock’s, CH & FC 'A', CR & FC, Air force 'A', Kandy SC, Navy 'A',
Police 'A' and Army 'A' who ended up 1st and 2nd in the
their groups will battle in the Cup/ Plate segment.
Day
2 will feature 20 games. The games will commence at 9am, and the cup final is scheduled
for 5.40pm. Who will be the Dialog Club Rugby 7’s champions for 2019? Come over
