Kandy Sports Club completed a hat-trick of doubles – 2015/16 – 2017/18 -- as Sri Lankan Legend FazilMarija brought an end to his illustrious career.
Quarter Finals -
Kandy Sports Club
continued in the dominant vein of form, steamrolling Air Force in the first of
four quarter-finals. CH on the other hand came in with a sense of expectation
but CR chucked CH out with as OmalkaGunarathene final got into the groove of
things.
Army Sports Club had their chance to gain redemption for their second
round capitulation but Havelock Sports Club had other ideas as they had a
season to revive after a moderate season.
Semi Finals -
CR stepped in with glitter over their quarter-final win, but Kandy
soon brought them back down to earth, bossing the reds around the park up as
DanushkaRanjan finally hit his straps in the Kandy jersey as Marija's
fairy-tale run continued.
Both, Havelock and Navy bossed their opponents at home but walked into
the semi-final to settle scores on neutral ground. It was the side from the far
West who prevailed, setting up a final showdown between first and second on the
points table as Navy had another opportunity for Silverware.
An exciting encounter was brewing at the iconic Longdon Place Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club grounds as Navy was in touching distance of Kandy -- even though they did not score -- as the 40 minute mark of 2017/18 season loomed ahead of them.
The Sailors drew within a point as Marija made a rare error, but superstar center DanushkaRanjan grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck lighting the day up for Marija for one last time.
With this win Kandy completed the double for a third consecutive
season, bidding farewell to Kandy Sports Club Legend Fazil Marija to bring an end to the 2017/18
top divisions XV%u2019s season.
